I can pretty much get the hype behind some television shows I don't watch (not really), but I'm having trouble figuring out why Orange Is The New Black has such a following. Is it the acting? Is it because it's set inside of a jail? What is so appealing about this television show? I know that most of the actors chosen for the show are not well known, so I'm guessing the storyline is interesting?
I tried to watch the very first episode of the show and I did not get glued in like the rest of the universe. I'm sure something is there, but I can't find out what. My confusion is similar about shows like, Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men. I cannot get into those shows for anything! I sort of feel like I'm boring.. And I always don't like what everyone else is watching. Clue me in! Why are people so excited about this show?
Seeing so many different kinds of women portrayed in one show is actually kind of rare and you don't even realize it until you watch this, usually it's the other way around. One huge, diverse, male cast and then some token female characters or a lot of the same, all young all pretty, all fit. Maybe they throw a tough character in or a gay character. But in this show you get the whole rainbow of characters and roles that women can play AND they are played as people first. It breaks the mold of women being either innocent and fragile or selfish bitches. It's so good at it, I often forget the gender aspect. At first all you are introduced to are the quirks and flaws, but it becomes apparent that they are human and doing what it takes to get by in their environment.
ReplyDeleteAt least, that's what I see in it and a big reason why I like it. It's a little crude at times and simply not going to be everyone's cup of tea though and I can respect that.
For the record, I hardly think just "not getting into" popular shows makes you boring, just means you get to expose your friends to shows they haven't heard of already! :)
